TRAUMA

The Body Keeps The Score by Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk, M.D.

This has been one of the most transformative reads of my life. I highly encourage anyone who wants to learn more about how trauma manifests itself in our bodies and minds, and how to most effectively treat trauma, to read this book. This book inspired me to become certified in EMDR and to focus on trauma informed care. A must read in my opinion for all practicing clinicians and clients alike.

Getting Past Your Past by Dr. Francine Shapiro, Ph.D.

This book was written by EMDR's founder, Francine Shapiro. An easy yet powerful read, this book is meant for the layman who wants to learn how to help himself heal from trauma with effective tools such as the safe place, breathing shift, and butterfly hug technique. It's also a simple introduction to EMDR, how it works and why it is effective. This is a very valuable place to begin if you want to get a head start on helping yourself heal from trauma.

Children of the Self-Absorbed: by Nina W. Brown, Ed.D., LPC

Literally called the grown up's guide to getting over narcissistic parents, this book assists those who have been hurt by parents who are the center of their own universe.  A good read to assist with knowledge of how selfish parents impact their children's lives, how to create healthy boundaries around this toxic behavior, and how and when to say no to parent's demands as well as support and encouragement in doing so.
