Counseling

I have been formally schooled and trained in many different therapeutic modalities, however these are the therapies and treatments I use most often in my practice and those I have found to have the biggest impact and most lasting change for my clients over time.  All of the below have been empirically researched and are evidence based:

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
  • AF-EMDR (Attachment Focused EMDR) and Resource Tapping: Laurel Parnell, Ph.D.
  • IFS (Internal Family Systems)
  • CES (Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation): Alpha Stim (www.Alleviahealth.com)
  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)
  • Art Therapy
  • Narrative Therapy
  • Rogerian Therapy

Using these therapeutic modalities I am able to treat:

  • Anxiety
  • Phobias
  • Panic attack/ panic disorder
  • OCD
  • Insomnia
  • Depression
  • Grief/loss
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Abuse, all (physical, emotional, mental, sexual, spiritual, others).
  • Recovery from narcissistic abuse
  • Dissociation
  • Relationship distress
  • Career distress
  • Mood disorders/ personality disorders
  • Anger/rage/irritability
  • Chronic pain/ somatic complaints
  • Disordered eating
  • Addictions
  • Life changes/stressors

I am able to see clients for:

Primarily individual counseling for adults over 18 years of age.  Please contact me if you would like a support person or animal to at times accompany your sessions.

Before you choose a therapist based on their training however, you might consider:

It is a proven scientific fact, backed up by empirical data and research, that the most important factor in determining a successful treatment outcome for the client is NOT the type of therapy that the therapist is trained in.

The most important factor for clients to heal and have a successful therapy experience is the professional relationship that they develop with their therapist.*

Carl Rogers (Rogerian Therapy) discovered this and called this way of being with clients "Unconditional Positive Regard", and this most important single factor drives my practice.

It is always my intention to provide a warm, caring, curious atmosphere where my clients can feel cared about, respected, valued, and listened to. Without this “feeling” in the room, no matter what technique a therapist uses, true healing cannot occur.

I encourage you to look for therapists who are well trained and educated. But beyond that, find someone who you truly “click with” as this will be the most important factor in the experience you have in counseling.

(*The only time when this might not be the case is when treating specific issues, such as PTSD or Borderline Personality Disorder, with a therapy designed to treat that specific disorder such as EMDR, or DBT.)
